As part of its tourist plans, the IMM Heritage team, which is affiliated to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Cultural Heritage, completed a restoration of the Mevlanakapı Police Station to preserve its original materials, textures, and masonry system. The 7.2 km long city walls were transformed into information centres on the development and defence systems of the city.
In 1826 after the Guild of Janissaries was abolished, all the law enforcement offices originally established under Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediyye for Istanbul’s security, were converted into police stations. The Mevlanakapı Police Station was one such building built in the 19th century.
According to oral sources, the building was used as a residence in the 1930’s. It was eventually abandoned and left to ruin.
The IMM heritage team restored the roof and exterior walls which were in ruins, as well as reconstructing the front and main wall at the bastions of Edirnekapı, Silivrikapı, Mevlanakapı and Sulukule gates. The book café concept library is now available for use, and is located in the visitor centre of the station.
