The Bebek Cistern was historically used for different purposes such as fishing and gardening.

It was also used as a recreation area by the city’s residents from the middle of the 19th century until the end of the 20th century.

Thanks to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Heritage team’s restoration the cistern can once again serve the city’s urbanites; now as an exhibition and art venue, which opened September 29th, 2021.
