Thanks to their technological infrastructure that supports access to remote education, digital library and large reading areas, conference halls, wide variety of activity and workshop areas, and YouTube recording studios, our Libraries are becoming a frequent destination for Istanbul residents, primarily young people. The number of our next generation libraries, affiliated to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality project, is ever increasing.
The second library opening as part of this project is located in Boğazköy, Arnavutköy, and was opened on September 16th, 2022 with a ceremony attended by IMM’s Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. This library is named after the thinker Cemil Meriç, who holds an important place in Turkish literature as a writer, translator, and sociologist.
Envisioned as a cultural centre the library aims to meet the various needs of Istanbul residents by working in conjunction with organizations such as the Public Health Center, Yuvamız Istanbul (Our Home Istanbul Kindergarten), Sports Facilities, the Regional Employment Office, and İSMEK (Istanbul Art and Vocational Training Courses).
The Cemil Meriç Library is part of the IMM next generation library project. It homes a rich collection of 16,000 books containing works in many genres such as History, literature, political science, philosophy, research and review, art, informatics, technology, science, belief, self-improvement, cultural heritage, architecture and design books, children's books, and periodicals.
Our library serves all Istanbul residents, especially the people of Arnavutköy, with a capacity of 135 people in an area of 602 square meters. Since the first day it was opened, the library has been hosting many events such as creative writing workshops, writer-reader meetings, cartoon and illustration workshops, scenario workshops, video art studies and informatics workshops.
Our library also meets the study area needs of the young people in the region. The people of the region will be able to benefit from the lending services of the Cemil Meriç Library as well as all libraries affiliated to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Department of Cultural Heritage, Directorate Libraries and Museums. Readers who wish to become members should apply to our libraries with an officially valid identity document such as a TR ID card, driver's license, or passport.
